Helping with Back to School Anxiety

We're almost ready for the new school year which may bring excitement for some but anxiety for others.

We're here to talk about a few ways you can prepare your little ones for the start of term, whether it's starting school or moving up a year.

I am absolutely delighted to be quoted by Netmums in their article all about helping with back to school anxiety, please read it here.

RITUAL

Set aside some time with your child and ask them some questions that gets them thinking about an achievement, a challenge they overcame, or a moment of kindness. They can recognise their growth. Then ask them what they're looking forward to about he new term. This will shift their mindset from worry to anticipation.

Questions you could ask...

What were you most proud of last year?

What is something you would like to learn or try this year?

What are you looking forward to this year?

REFLECTION

The end of the summer is a time of huge emotional transition for a child and by encouraging a simple ritual of reflection, you're giving them a tool to process their emotions, recognise their strengths, and build resilience. This is a crucial step for their mental health before they walk back through the school gates.

"This is not about adding another chore to the back-to-school checklist, it's about taking care of your child's emotional well-being and giving them a strong, positive mindset so they can have the best school year ever."

NORMALISING EMOTIONS

Talk about your feelings and experiences of school by asking them questions and answering those questions too.

Talking about emotions shows it's okay to be open.
