There are certain moments of childhood that we expect to remember forever.
Their first smile.
Their first steps.
The first day of school.
Birthdays, holidays and family celebrations.
These are the milestones we photograph, talk about and celebrate.
But when I think about childhood, I've realised it's rarely those big moments that I miss the most.
It's the little things.
The things that seem so ordinary at the time that you never imagine you'll forget them.
The little things become the big things
One day, they'll stop asking you to check for monsters under the bed.
They'll no longer insist on wearing the same superhero cape every single day.
You'll forget the way they pronounced "spaghetti," the imaginary worlds they created in the garden, or the hilarious answers they gave to simple questions.
The favourite cuddly toy that had to come everywhere.
The song they wanted on repeat.
The bedtime routine that had to happen in exactly the same order.
At the time, they feel like everyday life.
Then, somehow, they're gone.
Childhood changes quietly
People often say, "The days are long, but the years are short."
It's such a simple phrase, but it's incredibly true.
Children don't change overnight.
It's gradual.
Their handwriting becomes neater.
Their drawings become more detailed.
Their interests evolve.
Their conversations become deeper.
One day, you suddenly realise they've stopped saying a word a certain way, or they've outgrown a favourite game, and you can't remember exactly when it happened.
That's why writing things down matters.
Why I created The Book of You
When my daughter was little, she was endlessly chatty.
She said the funniest things and had the biggest personality.
I found myself thinking, I'll definitely remember this.
But I knew I wouldn't.
I searched for a memory book that captured not just milestones, but personality.
Something that celebrated who a child is, not just what they do.
When I couldn't find one, I created it.
That's how The Book of You began.
More than a milestone book
There are wonderful books that help you record firsts.
But childhood isn't only made up of firsts.
It's made up of everyday moments.
The funny conversations.
The endless questions.
The favourite books.
The things that make them laugh.
The little habits that drive you mad today but you'll smile about years from now.
Those are the memories that become priceless.
Just once a year
One of the things parents tell us they love most about The Book of You is that it doesn't feel overwhelming.
You don't need to remember to fill it in every week or every month.
Instead, you complete it once a year—perhaps around a birthday or another special milestone.
In just a short amount of time, you've captured an entire year of childhood.
As the years go by, the pages become a beautiful timeline of growth, personality and family life.
A gift for your future self
It's easy to think you're creating a keepsake for your child.
And you are.
But you're creating something for yourself, too.
Years from now, you'll open those pages and be transported back to a version of your child that might otherwise have been lost to time.
You'll remember the jokes.
The obsessions.
The quirks.
The little person they were.
Because memories fade, but written words have a remarkable way of bringing them back to life.
Because their story matters
At Colour Chronicles, we believe every childhood deserves to be remembered—not just through photographs, but through words.
Through stories.
Through laughter.
Through the wonderfully ordinary moments that make every child unique.
Because one day, those little moments won't feel little at all.
They'll be some of your greatest treasures.
Ready to start capturing their story?
The Book of You is a beautifully designed childhood journal to complete once a year from ages 1 to 16, preserving the memories, milestones and personalities that make childhood so magical.
