World Laughter Day - first Sunday of May!

Have you ever heard of the lovely tradition of the Navajo First Laugh Ceremony? Well, I hadn't either until recently and think it's too good not to share, especially as this Sunday marks World Laughter Day!

The First Laugh Ceremony is a beautiful celebration that marks a special milestone in a baby's life.

The ceremony celebrates a baby's first laugh and it is tradition that the person who makes the baby laugh first is the one to throw the party! Oh, yes please!

THE SIGNIFICANCE

The ceremony celebrates a baby's first laugh, which is believed to signal the moment when the child's spirit fully enters the world. It's a joyful occasion that brings together family, friends, and community members to share in the happiness of this milestone.

THE RITUAL

During the ceremony, the baby is dressed in traditional Navajo attire and seated on a special blanket. Family members take turns entertaining the baby to elicit their first laugh. This can involve playful antics, funny faces, or gentle teasing—all in good spirits to encourage the baby's laughter.
